There are eleven lakes of varying size and depth in the vicinity of Rotorua. Most lakes are open all year round. Major fishing lakes are Rotorua, Rotoiti, Tarawera, Okataina and Rotoma. To a lesser extent Lakes Rerewhakaaitu, Rotoehu, Aniwhenua (on the Rangitaiki River) and Waikaremoana can be found further east of the others.
